A kitchen remodel is one of the most expensive home renovation projects a homeowner will ever embark on. However, it’s also one of the most important and practical. We all love our kitchens – we not only cook in them but we also eat, chitchat, and sometimes even do our work in our kitchen nook.
Naturally, before embarking on a kitchen remodel, there are a couple of questions you’d want to ask your prospective contractor.
Based on our experience, the ones below are the most common and important questions for most homeowners.
1. How much will a kitchen remodel cost?
There’s no fixed amount when it comes to establishing the cost of a kitchen remodel. However, you can always come up with a budget based on the following details:
• Size of the kitchen
• Price of the materials to be used
• Complexity of the kitchen layout
• Customizations (if any)
A good rule of thumb in calculating the cost of a kitchen remodel is to consider 10 to 20 percent of your home's market value. Keep in mind that a kitchen remodel is an investment which, when done well, can increase the value of your home.
2. What would be the most expensive item in a kitchen remodel?
Generally speaking, it’s the cabinetry that will have the biggest impact on your budget. In fact, it can take up about a third or half of the cost of your kitchen remodel project. The cost will, of course, depend on the quality, material used, and whether or not you will buy readymade units or prefer customized cabinets.
Other materials to be used, including kitchen surfaces, will also affect the final cost of a kitchen remodel.
3. How long does it take to finish a kitchen remodel?
Again, there’s no hard and fast answer to this one as each kitchen remodel is unique. If the project involves tearing down walls, rewiring as well as plumbing work, among other things, each of these tasks will take a day or two to finish.
Then, of course, there’s the planning and design to be considered. If you require custom cabinetry, you may need to wait for about two to four months before delivery. Other design decisions like the flooring, appliances, countertops, backsplash, lighting, etc., also need to be made.
A simple (and small) kitchen remodel can be finished in about eight weeks. But again, depending on your requirements and the complexity of the job, it can take as long as four to six months.
4. How do I prepare my home for a kitchen remodel?
Kitchen remodeling projects are generally disruptive because they involve a major section of the home. So before construction work commences, you'll want to clear out the area allocated for the project. You will need to take out all of your personal belongings. You should also protect your furniture and appliances with thick, sturdy plastic covers or sheets. Better yet, have them moved to a safe area or an empty room, or to your temporary kitchen.
When you embark on your kitchen remodel project, there will probably be other questions that will crop up. However, we hope we’ve covered the basics for you in this article.
